Why did you choose UCLA for residency?            

I applied and interviewed broadly to critically examine many residency programs to find one that treated the broadest range of patients, emphasized a strong knowledge base, maximized involvement / "ownership" in each patient's care, and valued non-clinical activities / accomplishment.  UCLA was clearly the best.  The even distribution of shifts between the academic Reagan and county Olive-View sites promises a rare mix of patients with esoteric multi-faceted diseases, "classic" emergencies,  steady trauma, and varied socioeconomic backgrounds / needs.  The arrangements and relationships at Reagan allows for an environment to interact and learn from strong collegial consultants while maintaining firm involvement and decision-making abilities in patient care.  The resource-limited county context of Olive-View embodies the opportunity to maximize care to a needy and deserving population while seeing unique and dramatic diseases.  The attendings, residents, and staff all consistently demonstrate true dedication to excellence that guarantees a great set of teachers to learn from and work with.  Perhaps most importantly, the people seemed down-to-earth, kind, well-rounded, and eager to support each other both inside and outside the department.  I am very grateful and excited for my experience with this family in the UCLA emergency departments!

Hiking around Malibu near sunset with friends and then eating delicious Korean barbecue
